The rear rod is 0.770″ in diameter. The cross rod is 0.5″ in diameter. And, the stop rod is 0.25″ in diameter. You will want to round the end, or perhaps point the end of the stop rod so it can act as a precise stop. Lastly, check below for a drawing of the cotter cylinders. Step 4: Nut. I think the factory made nuts are cast, it took some more chiselling and filing to make the shape so it could extend forward of the angled face. I cut the angle with a 60° dovetail cutter. I drilled the nut with it clamped to the base after first drilling a pilot in the base so the setup was the same.

Step 2: Fabrication. I made the toolpath using Fusion360 and have attached a step file of just the frame laid out flat as well as the .f3d file with the CAM for the tools I used. For this toolpath I used a 1/8in flat endmill with a feedrate of 3in/s=180in/min. The parts can be cut out of a 25inx17inx0.5in plywood sheet.

3) Mini Fire Piston. This project uses three pieces of 12 mm aluminum. These are cut down with a hand saw and the entire project uses pretty basic shaping and drilling skills. I too have very basic bench drill (RECORD) which I inherited, I have made a few mods for milling non ferrous metals with an old XY table. The main limitations were the Jacobs taper chuck mounting and the flimsy tubular column. I replaced the column with a solid one and after removing the chuck drilled and reamed the end to take ¼ end mills.

5-axis Milling is not an easy thing to do. I know I still need to find a robust way to zero the machine before I start cutting. Maybe add probes to make some basic homing and calibration possible. But I think overall this project was a nice and productive way of putting some really advanced CNC techniques to the test.
