Follow the basic rule of 40 to 80 cutters and 20 to 40 combs for every emery paper. If the sparks seem dull during the grind, change the papers. Another thing is to check for glue bubbles during the change for emery papers. If there is glue, change it right away. The glue inhibits the sharpening process and may cause the blades to fly off.
