I'll admit, I just bought the Harbor Freight (Sieg X2 Mini mill) and have zero regrets. It's done more than I intended it for, and done it all with enough precision for me. Granted it's all been aluminum work thus far but as long as you understand its capabilities it works great. Also, Little Machine Shop does a nice array of upgrades if wanted.

Below is shown an example mounting on a mini-mill like those sold by Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Homier,etc. A small bracket is machined with a raised area to mount the sensor on. The raised area is tapped for a 4-40 screw that will fit through the slit in the sensor to mount it to the bracket.

My mill now has a fully functioning 2 axis DRO. Machining the brackets for the Y axis gave me my first experience using the X axis DRO. It was wonderful! The only problem was when I had to move the Y axis I still had to look at dial graduations and count turns of the handle. I have also mounted the backing plate for the Z axis scale.

This DRO kit works on any 7x10, 7x12, 7x14, or 7x16 lathe made by SIEG, which includes virtually all the mini lathes sold in the US and most of the mini lathes sold world-wide. The DRO mounts right on the cross slide and compound rest to give you accurate depth-of-cut readings. The resolution is 0.0001", the accuracy is 0.001".

My mill is the standard Central Machinery (Sieg X2) I also own a Mini Lathe, from Cummins. got my DRO today and mounted it without too much trouble to my harbor freight mill. After some testing I found that spinning the wheel fast, it reads 1.56mm per 1 full turn. if you move the wheel slowly it reads 1.44mm or less. quite inaccurate. if you keep turning the wheel very slowly over a few millimeters your reading goes off more and more.

Few years later I got Mini Mill from Harbor Freight - a variation of Sieg X2 mill. These two machines are very good when tuned well. I was able to achieve the precision of 0.001inch what is enough for my needs. When the mill arrived to my shop it was mostly assembled but I decides to take it apart, clean, lubricate and adjust the way I wanted.

This DRO works great and seems to be good quality. I just finished installing on my Harbor Freight mini mill. Absolute best deal for the money. Similar setups are twice the price. Pretty fast shipping considering it came from outside the U.S. Only reason I could not give 5 stars is the instructions are absolutely horrible.
