Opinions Please: Ball Screws on Manual Mill. Since picking up my new to me 1987 Webb 4VH Milling Machine about two weeks back, I've been workng to get it running again. With set screw removed you can unscrew the nosepiece. I use an adjustable spanner wrench You will find two holes on the bottom of the nosepiece for this. You may need to use a punch and hammer to get it started. Right hand thread for Bridgeport mill, left hand thread for Imports.

Ball screws are required with a CNC mill. While CNC control is on the servo or stepper holds the screws tight all the time. In manual though the ball screws will move (creep) when not intended. The original acme screw has more hold on the non moving axis. So if you have ball screws you need to always tighten down the non moving axis.
