Just remember, the machine itself is probably half the cost. You'll spend the same amount again buying tooling and accessories for the lathe. If you can find a used one that comes with a lot of tooling, that is a help. The main issue is getting one in good condition that has been taken care of. Same advice goes for milling machines.

Mill spindle lock question (PM-932M-PDF) Relative noobie to milling, so time to probably sound like one. I'm helping a robotics team set up their first mill, a Precision Matthews PM-932M-PDF. Now I've only ever used a Vectrax mill that had a spindle stop that allowed you to hold the spindle still while loosening the draw bar.

maybe some pro can tell me how right or wrong my idea of how to do it is. square stock to dimension 20 - 30 min. indicate side that needs milling 2-3 min. drill hole to depth of one of the 3 holes on the other side so you can get an endmill in there. mill pocket 20-25 min. turn part. indicate 2-3 min. spot 2 min.
