The largest end mill I can hold is 1/2" (stem) hence my comment re a larger holding system. I recently completed the radius attachment but have not used it in earnest - only a test run. When I reviewed which unit to make I picked the Tinker as it appeared to be within my capabilities which was not the case with a Quorn.

I dig in my used end mills drawer to find one with decent edges left. If it is a 4 flute I grind back two of the cutting edges 180 apart so all I have to worry about is two cutting edges. Being in job shop all my life were one offs are common and often the customer is in a hurry and the job has to be ready by the AM you learn

all 2 flute end mills can be sharpened by hand so basically only one flute is cutting like a 1 tooth flycutter. like in over 4 decades of machining and if you run out of a certain size end mill and you really have to use that size i have maybe a few hundred times hand sharpened a 2 flute end mill to act as a one flute end mill to get the job done.

This is a good idea, I had forgotten about the Tinker, this was one of the ones I had considered for myself, if I remember correctly there's a set of castings available for the larger one but it can be built from bar stock as well, I think the larger version is capable of grinding the sides of end mills.:thinking:

Austenitic stainless is very prone to work hardening. When I started I was using a 1/2" rougher at 20ipm and 1200RPM. It took 1.5 hours to pocket the interior ring. I switched to a high-performance tool, a shrinker, and a dynamic contour. I did the same job in 26 minutes at 284ipm, 5200rpm, and a .025" stepover.
