A more powerful milling machine will use more electricity, cost more, and will probably require a 240V supply – this could be single or 3-phase. Though even a milling machine with a smaller motor can suffice, you can always increase your torque by lowering your speed and come to a reasonable compromise when using a slightly underpowered machine.

Hi. I recently bought a Bridgeport Series 1 mill that is 3 phase 230 vac. The name plate indicates 1 hp and 3.3 amps. What model AC Tech SMV Vector VFD do you recommend? Three phase allows for simpler motors—no starter caps, etc. Any efficiency gain, however, is going to be wiped out by the VFD. However, unless you're running a full time machine shop, I doubt that matters. The real advantage is being able to fine-tune the lathe speed without stopping and changing gears. It will also give you variable speed, overload protection and low voltage control (replaces a magnetic starter). If you have more than one 3 phase machine you might consider buying or building a rotary phase converter.
