I have a really nice air bearing setup for grinding the flutes on end mills and it can be setup to also sharpen the ends of the end mills but is a lot more work than a dedicated fixture for this purpose. I spent the last few days building a dedicated fixture that is easy to set up and use to grind the ends of the end mill.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I do what Harold says. Most of the time I'm using the end of the cutter (the 1st 20 to 60 thouhs) and when that gets dull, I simply use the bench grinder to hand sharpen the end; grind it back & put the reliefs on (without reducing the diameter). For end mills 1/2" in diameter & greater, this works well.

For the sides you need an end mill sharpening fixture. Harig I believe called theirs Air-Flo, Weldon also had an air bearing unit. I know Weldon's unit also had a fixture for sharpening the ends that mounted on the top of the air bearing unit. There are also end sharpening fixtures that will mount directly on the mag chuck.

Stevenson's ER32 Sharpening Fixture. This fixture is used to grind 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12 fluted end mills and shell mills, normally on a surface grinder, using a magnetic table to hold the fixture. It is designed to grind the face only, not the flutes. Any metric or imperial shank between 2mm and 20mm can be held with a suitable ER32 collet.

And common usage causes most end mills to go away on the corners long before the majority of the cutter is dull. So cut off part of the end, use a cheap fixture to regrind the end flutes (surface grinder, tool grinder, even a shop made fixture on a bench/"carbide" type grinder), and keep on going.

8,031. Nov 5, 2012. #2. That fixture is only for sharpening the end of the end mill. It is an attachment for a surface grinder. The flutes require a fixture that allows the end mill to twist along the spiral edge of the flutes, with a small finger tracing the helix. There are also two angles involved there as well.
