A cabochon is a gemstone that you make into a rounded shape and then polish instead of faceting like a crystal stone. Cabochons, or cabs, can be small--as in a tiny pendant--or large, as in a cowboy's belt buckle. Most cabs are oval- or circle-shaped. The rock is first cut into a slab, with the thickness determined by the planned project size.

To use the Spool Polisher just take a dopped cabochon that has been ground on at least a 220 grit grinding wheel and apply a dab of 325 grit compound to the first section of the spool. Work the stone into this 2 inch section of the revolving spool. The gem is then wiped clean and 600 grit compound is applied too the adjacent section.

Shape the cabochon. Using your grinder, shape the preformed stone into the cabochon – adding water to the wheel to keep the stone cool and dust to a minimum. Each time the stone dries, stop, and then add more water before starting again. When grinding, use the lower quarter of the wheel to avoid losing grip on the stone.
