The location of a textile mill in the county is unusual, as most such mills were located in the Piedmont region, but it was part of a larger thriving industrial economy. The Fries mill was the county's only large industrial mill in 1911, and its operation attracted other professionals to the town such as attorneys and physicians.

Fries is named for Colonel Francis H. Fries of North Carolina, founder of the Washington Mills Company. By 1900, Fries and his associates had determined that the New River could power a textile mill. The town was incorporated in 1902, and by the following year a dam, a textile mill, and 300 houses had been built.

The New River still gushes over the dam and laps at grassy banks and curls around low branches. Actually, the Town of Fries is looking for developers for the old mill site. Plans include a small strip-mall with a few shops along the banks of New River, a restaurant and/or lodging facilities in the parking lot area just above and overlooking where the old mill stood, and possibly a new fire department building in one corner of the parking lot.
