Machine in question is a wells index model 55. The machine looks good in pictures and the ways seem to be pretty easily identifiable so it appears to have relatively little wear for a machine from the 50's. The price being asked for it is $4000 and I'll post the details about it below.

It's in Enid, OK - about 300 miles away. The photos were horrible but I was able to determine that 1) it was an Index Model 645, 2) it came with a milling vise and a rotary table 3) it had a power feed. The seller didn't know much about the machine, so was unable to answer my questions about spindle taper, wear, etc.

Wells Index is still in business (the last time I checked) and can provide some parts and manuals for these machines. They will also regrind the spindle to R8, which can be handy. I had the one in my Super 55 done a few years ago and it ran about 200 then, not including shipping in both directions. Looks like a nice machine.

This machine was originally designed (& possibly built) by blank & buxton (b & b) as their model 40-h miller. It was made in 1939 or '40. Wells-index does not have company records prior to about s. 750, if i recall correctly. The table is 8″ x 30″, overall, with a 22″ working surface that has three 1/2″ t-slots.
